It takes a lot of confidence to be this ridiculous.
So… Teen Vogue upset me today. They upset me reeeeeaaaalll bad. But every cloud has a silver lining and long story short: they published a rather foolish and reductionist article supposedly about the Natural Hair Movement and it raised a whole bunch of issues, mainly cultural appropriation by white women and erasure of black women. Really, business as usual.
In a series of tweets, I broke down why the article was wrong and inappropriate and why the Natural Hair Movement is far more than just some vanity project. White people and people of colour who think ‘it’s just hair’, please sit down for this particular Sunday Sermon. I took everybody to church.
You can see the whole saga over at Storify.
And social media is good for more than just venting by the way. As a result of my comments I will be appearing on The Conversation with Claire Clottey on Bang Radio on Sunday 10th May to discuss the Natural Hair Movement, identity, self-acceptance and more with Vinna Best of UK Naturals, founder of Natural Hair Week. Not bad for one weekend!
